Section 2 How Minerals Form

Vocabulary:

solution - a mixture of one substance dissolved in another, and usually is in a liquid.
vein - a mineral, in a narrow channel, that is way different from the surrounding rock.

Outline:

Process That Forms Minerals
  • In general minerals from in two ways
    • crystallization of melted material
    • crystallization of materials dissolved in water
Minerals From Magam
  • Minerals form as hot lava that cools inside the crust
*Many things affect the size of the crystal
    • The rate the magma cools
    • The amount of gas in the magma
    • The chemical compostion of the magma
Minerals From Hot Water Solutions
  • Hot water solution minerals form in a multi-step process
    • First, water goes inside the crust dissolving the minerals
    • Second, the magma heating up the water
    • Third, water comes out and cools making crystals
  • Many of these minerals form where techtonic plates split
Minerals formed by Evaporation
  • Minerals can also be formed by evaporation
  • Several useful minerals are formed by evaporation
    • halite
    • gypsum
    • calite
minerals containing potassium
where minerals are found**
  • the crust is made mostly of the common rock froming minerals
